While brides-to-be can spend countless hours dreaming up their wedding invitations, they often overlook their Save the Dates. In today's world, the small-town local wedding is a rare thing. So many more friends and family, having moved away for school, work or love, are having to travel great distances to attend a loved one's wedding. This means that by the time the invitations arrive three months before the wedding date, guests have probably already decided whether they will attend, and have booked flights and hotels accordingly. This is why Save the Dates are extremely important. Perhaps even more so than the invitation, they set the tone for the wedding and might greatly influence a guest's decision about whether to attend.

So how can you save the date for your wedding in an unexpected and original way?

Instead of the plain white card or overused magnet, send a fortune cookie! You can have custom messages made on websites like for a minimal fee, or print and insert the messages yourself. Keep it simple--your names, your wedding date and city, and your wedding website (where you should post travel information as early as possible).

Package a single fortune cookie in a small cardboard box. Make sure you fill the box with some kind of packaging material, like shredded paper, so the delicate cookies don't break. Because they are so light, the cookies will ship cheaply. You can even add an additional touch by including a poem or a quote about luck or fortune on a small card placed in the box alongside the cookie:

"Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident... We had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two" (from Captain Corelli's Mandolin).

"We came by night to the Fortunate Isles / And lay like fish / Under the net of our kisses" (Pablo Neruda).

This creative Save the Date will be sure to have guests wondering what other fun touches are in store for your wedding!
