bridesmaidsWith previous generations, it was often customary for the bride to purchase her bridesmaids' dresses. Nowadays, it's quite common for bridesmaids to not only pay for their gowns, but also their makeup, hairstyling, shoes and other accessories. If your wedding falls into the latter category, the topic of money is likely to come up sooner or later with your bridesmaids. But with a little tact and lots of open communication, you can approach the often-awkward subject of expenses.

  • Let your bridesmaids know up-front which costs they're expected to cover. This will avoid any last-minute surprises they might not have budgeted for, and may even include something such as the rehearsal dinner if it's being held at a restaurant.
  • Don't assume anything about your bridesmaids' financial situations. You might think that your sister-in-law with the high-flying PR job will have no problem covering her bridesmaids expenses. But you never know what your bridesmaids can (or are willing) to afford.
  • If your bridesmaids seem financially burdened, see if there's any way you can reduce their expenses. This could be as simple as asking them to forgo a wedding gift because of all of the time and expense they've already invested in your big day.
  • Let your bridesmaids in on their dress decisions. It's easier to foot the bills for your friend's wedding if you're let in a little on the decision-making. However, don't allow the situation to get carried away by a bullying bridesmaid.
