With more emphasis on protecting the environment in recent years, many couples are trying to incorporate ecologically responsible products and practices into their wedding planning. And though you may not be ready for a totally green wedding complete with a hemp wedding gown, there are several things you can do to have a more eco-friendly wedding.

Stay Local
By getting married locally, you will cut down transportation costs for your family and guests while helping air quality and saving fuel. Additionally you can support your community by using local mom-and-pop vendors for all your wedding needs. Get back to nature by choosing an outdoor garden location, winery, orchard or even your own backyard to hold your ceremony.

Use Recycled Paper
Many invitation distributors are switching to recycled paper or non-tree paper. You can order beautiful wedding invitations from Invitations by Dawn. Choose invitations from their Naturally Ever After collection which are crafted on quality, recycled papers containing at least 30% post-consumer fibers. With these lovely recycled paper invitations, you don't have to sacrifice style.

Go Organic
Explain to your
caterer that you want a menu using all organic food products. Select organic wines that are grown in your region. Organic food and wine are grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or antibiotics. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is Canada's most popular and largest certified organic vineyard. On their website, you can purchase an array of organic wines by the bottle or by the case.

Choose Potted Plants
Instead of flowers, decorate your ceremony and reception sites with blooming potted plants. At the end of the night, guests can take them home and the plants can be re-planted. If you insist on fresh flowers, donate the bouquets and centerpieces to a local nursing home or hospital after your reception.

Get Digital Photos
Skip the film and go digital. Film wastes paper and uses chemicals. Digital photos are environmentally friendly and easier to share with friends. Most wedding photographers offer digital photographs and videos.

Select Green Vendors
Choose an eco-conscious reception facility that uses CFL bulbs, avoids plastic water bottles and recycles when at all possible. For your honeymoon, stay at a green hotel. Websites such as Green Hotels and I Stay Green offer listings of thousands of environmentally friendly hotels worldwide.

Buy Eco-friendly Favors

Instead of traditional favors, select green wedding favors such as flower seeds, plant bulbs and bamboo plants. Tree Canada offers tree seeds kits that provide your guests with everything they need to grow their own trees. Each kit is only $1.50.

Give Back to Charity
Instead of wedding gifts, suggest that your friends and family contribute to your favorite environmental cause instead. If you don't want to forego the gifts completely, you can use the I Do Foundation for your gift registry. When you register with one of their partner stores, up to 10% of the gifts purchased can be donated to the charity of your choice.
